One case study concluded that optimizing the preanalytical phase can result in a significant improvement in practices and sample quality.6

The costs of delivering healthcare are continuingly rising faster than payment for healthcare services, driven by many factors, including increasing population size and aging and the increasing costs of pharmaceuticals, supplies, medical technology, and personnel.7,8

There is increasing economic pressure in healthcare delivery that is forcing hospitals to require their laboratories to over perform relative to their resourcing, putting pressure on phlebotomists to rush procedures.8,9,10

Diagnostic accuracy matters.

Sometimes a test result is less critical than others. Sometimes a result could lead to a patient’s survival. Proper diagnosis and treatment rely on accurate test results. And accurate test results rely on every step of the specimen management process working.

Diagnostic accuracy is the result of a lot of little things going right. The collection processes. The quality of the sample. Storage. Transport. Everything has to work together, which is why our training and education programs, combined with our PAQC (Preanalytical Quality Check), may help improve diagnostic accuracy by analyzing and making recommendations on product selection and optimal use to impact every facet of the process:

Based on the average survey responses of 225 laboratory professionals (Lab Directors, Laboratory Managers and Laboratory Technicians), BD was rated higher than Greiner Bio-One for ensuring analytical accuracy.18

  • By implementing the BD Vacutainer® Urine Collection System and changing the urine culture ordering process, antimicrobial prescriptions for urinary indications among admitted patients were reduced from 20.6% to 10.9%, representing a reduction of approximately 50% without any cases of untreated UTIs identified.19
  • One study has shown that using a direct transfer device to transfer urine directly from a urological catheter to an evacuated urine collection tube may decrease the likelihood of sample contamination, which may enable more accurate diagnosis of a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI).15
  • One study showed that using BD Vacutainer® Luer-Lok Access Device in conjunction with education and training reduced the rate of samples rejected due to hemolysis from 8.1% to 1.4%, an estimated 83% reduction.20
  • In one study, no statistically significant difference in Hemolysis Index was noted between the 25-gauge BD Vacutainer® UltraTouch™ Blood Collection Set with ultrathin wall cannula and the 23-gauge BD Vacutainer® Push Button Blood Collection Set with thin wall cannula.21

One cost estimate has shown that an average 650-bed US hospital spends an estimated $1.2M annually due to preanalytical errors.2

What is the cost of a diagnostic test? There are the specimen collection devices and tubes used to collect specimens, of course. And the time spent by staff in collecting, transporting, and processing those specimens in the laboratory. But to get a true sense of the total cost, you have to ask: What is the cost of an unusable sample? The cost of redraws and delayed diagnoses and unhappy patients? Of additional products and resources?

The total cost of ownership is far greater than the cost of the specimen collection devices and tubes. And the way to reduce it is not by nibbling around the edges, but by taking a comprehensive approach to specimen management to help reduce preanalytical errors, and therefore overall cost.

BD works with customers to reduce total cost of ownership, with products and support services that have been demonstrated to make an impact:

  • BD Vacutainer® closed urine collection system along with standardized preanalytical steps showed a higher rate of conclusive tests compared to an open urine collection system, highlighting potential improvement in lab efficiency due to reduction in retesting.3

  • Based on the average survey responses of 225 laboratory professionals (directors, managers and technicians), BD was rated higher than Greiner Bio-One for satisfaction with value/cost of ownership.4

  • In a study performed at Erasmus University Medical Center, Netherlands, BD Vacutainer® Barricor™ Blood Collection Tubes* led to a decreased cost of almost 5 Euro cents per tube compared to BD Vacutainer® SST™ II Advance Blood Collection Tubes.*5
