Join us for our webinar: Mitigating the Risk of Extravasation with Power Injection
Abstract:
Extravasation of contrast media has increased since the introduction of power injection. Published rates are low; however, the high number of computed tomography procedures puts many patients at risk. The outcome for an individual patient can be devastating and long lasting with compartment syndrome and nerve damage topping the list. This presentation is based on a literature review and highlights a case study approach to discuss lawsuits involving contrast extravasation. Techniques for catheter assessment and new technology to reduce this serious complication will also be discussed.
Objectives:
- Review the clinical picture of extravasation injury associated with power injection of contrast agents.
- Describe the characteristics of contrast agents that can produce tissue damage with extravasation.
- Identify deviations of the standard of care identified in lawsuits involving contrast extravasation and the corresponding methods to prevent these deviations.
- Explore techniques and new technology to reduce these risks of extravasation.
