What is a lean assessment?

For over 20 years, lean assessments have been applied to healthcare settings with the goal of improving lab processes.

A lean assessment of a flow cytometry lab helps to identify areas of improvement. Metrics include the amount of manual work performed daily/yearly and where process optimization can be obtained. Optimizing workload processes

Through the lean assessment process, it was identified that by introducing a complete automated walk-away sample preparation to data analysis solution, the manual work performed by the lab operators could be dramatically decreased.

This implementation eliminated 67% of the manual steps required during sample processing, providing 75% time saving per run or 45 minutes of time back per run. Lab operators could now focus on data analysis and other value-added tasks.

The lab lean assessment also identified an area of improvement through a reduction in manual error-prone steps. These specific manual tasks are identified as those needing repeat testing should an error occur at this step. Critical, error-prone steps delay time to results and ultimately impact patient outcomes.
