This symposium will have two sessions. The first, Moving toward more comprehensive sexual health care for women and men, featuring Dr. Barbara Van Der Pol, PhD, MPH, will discuss testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI), co-infection rates between STIs and vaginitis, the importance of offering a broad menu of testing for symptomatic women, and advances in STI testing.
The second, Implementing molecular diagnostic testing for gastrointestinal (GI) pathogens, featuring Margie Morgan, PhD, MT(ASCP), D(ABMM) and Heba Mostafa, MD, PhD, D(ABMM), will discuss the importance of providing molecular testing options for clinically relevant enteric pathogens in line with the 2017 IDSA Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Infectious Diarrhea, and how transitioning from conventional culture to molecular testing can significantly improve sensitivity, specificity, and time to results, as well as factors to consider when deciding between comprehensive panels or a more focused, targeted approach.

This symposium explores the clinical implications of blood culture quality on sepsis patient care and hospital-onset bacteremia. Healthcare and laboratory professionals alongside industry and disease state experts will discuss the profound impact poor quality can have on patient morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. They also will share blood culture best practices, including the latest technologies, that have been clinically proven to improve overall blood culture quality. Lastly, the importance of optimized use of both techniques and technologies will be discussed to ensure that the invaluable diagnostic tool, blood cultures, are producing results with the highest sensitivity and specificity so that patients receive the best care possible.
